Being a mother and a wife often leads to neglecting our own needs. Life can sweep us away, and before we know it, days pass by without attending to ourselves. This is especially true when you spend all your time at home and feel less pressure to impress your loved ones. Yet, it's crucial to remember that caring for ourselves uplifts our spirits!
As I navigate my journey through school at home, I cherish the time spent with my kids, making up for the years I worked full-time. It's been about nine months, and I've relished being present, watching my children grow, and enjoying life alongside my husband. However, I noticed that I started stepping out less, feeling irritable, and, unsettlingly, showering less frequently. This led to feelings of heaviness and sadness, which my family surely sensed too.
To truly support your family, it's essential to take care of yourself first. I understand how difficult that can be at times, so here’s a list of 8 gentle reminders to help you pull yourself out of a rut and rediscover your true self:
- **Put the Phone Down!** – I know it can feel like your phone is glued to your hand, but consider the freedom that comes from disconnecting. You might worry about what to do instead, but you might find joy in simpler activities like tidying up or having a heart-to-heart with your kids or partner. Giving yourself space from constant notifications can really help you breathe and reset your mind.
- **Take a Bath or Shower.** – When you feel stressed or overwhelmed, a warm bath or shower can be incredibly soothing. Instead of rushing through it, take a moment to feel the heat of the water washing over you. Sometimes, just listening to the water can be calming and restorative.
- **Go for a Walk.** – Getting outside, even for a few minutes, can make a world of difference. Being in nature provides a refreshing break, especially on a beautiful fall morning. Take a moment to immerse yourself in the sights and sounds around you—you deserve that escape.
- **Get Pretty.** – It may seem trivial, but taking a little time to do your makeup or dress nicely can truly lift your spirits. It’s about feeling good in your own skin, which can be empowering, especially when you’re feeling down.
- **Listen to Music.** – Music has the incredible ability to shift our moods. I encourage you to play some of your favorite songs while you tidy up or relax. Allow the melodies to uplift you; they can create a sense of joy and motivation when you need it most.
- **Baking.** – There’s something wonderfully therapeutic about baking. It allows you to express your creativity while creating something delicious. The process of measuring, mixing, and baking can be almost meditative. Plus, it’s rewarding to enjoy what you’ve made!
- **Exercise.** – I know getting moving can be tough, but exercise has a profound impact on your mental health. When anxiety hits, engaging in physical activity can help release that pent-up energy. A simple walk or some gentle stretching can do wonders to calm your mind.
- **Be Kind to Others.** – You might be surprised at the impact that kindness can have on your well-being. A small gesture, like holding a door open or offering a compliment, can lift both your mood and someone else’s. It's okay to realize that spreading kindness also nurtures your own happiness.
Remember, you are important, and you are loved. It’s so vital to carve out time for yourself, whether it’s dedicating a day a month or a few hours each week. Yes, your family needs you, but you also need this time. When you nurture yourself, even in small ways, you’ll find that your mood improves, positively affecting everything and everyone around you.
